Google Glass censors swearing, no way to turn filter off

Google censor

Got a dirty mouth? Don't worry, Google will help you clean it up. When using Glass, you're at the mercy of what Google considers acceptable language.

Google's voice-to-text translation engine is among the best on the planet. It understands a variety of languages, handles accents better than most humans, and, overall, is great at understanding what you are saying. The tool has allowed Google to build things like Google Now, which can understand complete sentences and allow an OS act on your commands. It's one of the reasons the voice-only input for Google Glass seems like it could work, and since there's no other way to "type" it's not like users have any other choice.

Even so, Google has imposed limited. Just like Google's voice translation for Android, if you try and drop the F-bomb in a text message to a friend you'll find your message is tweaked on the display.

google-glass-yell-showerGoogle's dictation engine censors any swearing that crosses its servers, and has since the beginning. The company isn't alone in this, in fact most voice translation services will apply a PG rating to whatever you say. It stops you from accidentally swearing, or offers you some helpful alternatives just in case you meant something else. On phones, tablets, and nearly everything else with voice dictation you have the ability to go back and correct things manually. At the very least you can just fire up your keyboard and clear away those asterisks or to make it clear you are not trying to talk to some duck's mom.

If you're using Glass, there's no other options for text input. Much like the updated controls over SafeSearch, Google's going to be in control here. Unlike SafeSearch, there's absolutely no way to disable this filter. The settings give you no control over this right now, and since there's no Off switch on any of Google's other voice services it seems unlikely we'll see one here.

Iron Man 3

Are you ready to line up for the premiere of Iron Man 3 in your custom outfit with the arc reactor shirt and homemade arm repulsors? Even if that's not at all the case, Marvel has just the thing for your Android phone.

The last few years have seen a shift in pop culture where the comic book heroes from our childhoods have taken to the big screen and made a ton of cash in the process. The most popular is the Iron Man franchise, which kicked off a multi-film series that spawned an even bigger Avengers film. There's no signs of slowing down, as Marvel has already mapped out the next multi-film series that will be the Avengers sequel. A side effect of this popularity is the associated side content getting a huge boost in quality. A prime example of this is the new Iron Man 3 live wallpaper.

Historically, extended content — like video games and apps — for popular movies just isn't that great. This fan service usually comes out right before a movie hits or right before the movie is available on DVD, and usually exists to grab a little extra money from fans. This Iron Man 3 live wallpaper is a free app with an in-app purchase option for additional features, and — for some reason — is one of the highest quality LWPs available today.

The free version of the app, and the clock widget that it comes with, are very well done. The arc reactor doubles as a battery meter, and offers a nice 3D effect as you pan from windows to window. The JARVIS voice options are great for the super geeky.

If you pay the $2.99 for the full version of the LWP, you can upgrade from an arc reactor to all of Iron Man. The scenery in the background adjust based on time of day, and the suit will fire notifications for text messages and emails at you as long as the screen is on. The wallpaper works well in landscape or portrait, and adjusts very well to different screen sizes.

As live wallpapers go, this is an impressive piece of work. As Iron Man add-ons go, this is a cool toy to add to your arsenal. Whether you go for the free version or the paid version, it's a fun way to show off your geek streak.

Dockable Toshiba Android tablet leaks with Tegra 4 chip

Toshiba AT10LE tablet with Tegra 4

Toshiba may not be the first name that comes to mind when you think of Android tablets, but maybe that's due to change. The company's unannounced  Tegra 4 powered AT10LE-A might change that.

It's a 10.1-inch slate with Nvidia's latest and greatest under the hood clocked at 1.8GHz. Like the Asus Transformer series, the AT10LE-A can be docked into a keyboard accessory. There's no pointing device on Toshiba's keyboard, but that's not a complete surprise. While a keyboard definitely enhances productivity in certain situations on Android, a mouse doesn't. Pointer duties are still best left to a finger.

The lack of a trackpad isn't necessarily a big deal, but it's also not known whether this keyboard includes a secondary battery. Many Android tablet makers have gone that route so they can offer all-day unplugged use. It would be surprising to see the AT10LE — which looks like a premium device — launch without one. Like the Tegra 3, the quad-core Tegra 4 does include a fifth low-power core that helps boost endurance, but a second battery would still be a nice touch.

Toshiba isn't skimping on ports, at least. The AT10LE includes HDMI and USB ports as well as a micro SD expansion slot — something you don't always find in a high-end Android device.

Toshiba AT10LE

As for the OS, the leaked Toshiba unit is running Android 4.2.1. That could always change before the AT10LE launches, of course, particularly if it's not going to hit store shelves until after Google I/O.

There could very well be a new version announced in San Fran, and a tablet with a cutting-edge Tegra 4 chip shouldn't ship with anything but the latest and greatest software, right? Then again, that hasn't stopped manufacturers from shipping outdated Android versions on tablets before.
